PROCLAMATION APPOINTING JAMES GRANT AGENT TO THE LIPAN INDIANS 1 Executive Department, City of Houston, August 15, 1842. To all to whom these presents shall come or may concern-Greet- ing: Be it known that I, Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, reposing special trust and full confidence in the prudence, energy, fidelity, ability and patriotism of James Grant, Esquire, do, by these presents, constitute and appoint him the said James Grant, Esquire, agent of and for the Lipan tribe of Indians, in all things requiring the said agent to superintend the interests and regulate the movements of said tribe as he may be especially ordered by the Executive, or the Secretary of ·war, or as his best discretion may, at the time dictate; and, aiso, to protect the said tribe in the enjoyment of their just rights and in the peace- able possession of their property honestly acquired, and generally to improve their happiness and condition by introducing the arts of industry and preventing the use of intoxicating liquors. Full, frequent, and accurate reports will be made to the War Department transmitting all necessary information for the con- sideration of the Department, which can .in any way influence its action for the benefit of the tribe and the country. I have now merely time to request your particular attention to the securing all the ammunition, &c., &c., of the government within your reach, so that it may be readily obtained when wanted.
