To GENERAL JAMES DAVIS 1

City of Houston, 28th July, 1842. Dear General: As you are about to retire for the present from the service, I take pleasure in assuring you of my approbation of the manner in which you have executed the duties of your com- mand. You accepted it under the most discouraging circum- stances. The men were disorganized. They had been mutinous. Their supplies were insufficient. The country was without means to sustain you in the command. Desertion left you almost without men. You were attacked by more than treble your numbers of men and tho' you were with- out defenses against the enemy artillery, by your skill and firm- ness you gallantly repulsed the assailants with loss on their part whilst you preserved your command from injury or loss of life. You will have with you my confidence and best wishes, and should your services be again required, I have full confidence that you will be found at the post of ·honor, and gallantly defending your country.
