To JOSEPH WAPLES, SECRETARY OF STATE 1

City of Houston, 28th July, 1842. Mr. Waples, I wish to see the Report of Mr. Hyde made to the State Department. I wish to know by what authority Mr. Hyde made a contract with Stoddard recognizing the deprecia- tion of Exchequer Bills, and agreeing to make up any deficit, if they fell below 75 cents on the dollar. I was not apprised until lately that any reports had been made by Mr. Hyde. Sam Houston [ Addressed] : To Mr. Jos. Waples, Acting Secretary of State, present. [ Endorsed] : President to Secretary of State, July 28th 1842. Mail contract with J. W. Stoddard.
