campaign, he had held a contract to carry mail between Houston and Montgomery, and on January 14, 1840, President Lamar had signed a joint resolution of Congress 1·equiring the treasurer to pay him $697.00 for work rendered in this service. He was living in Montgomery County at this time, and he continued to live in that county until 1848, when he removed to Navarro County and settled on his headright survey, located partly in Navarro, and partly in Freestone County. The town of Streetman, Free- stone County, is about three miles from his old home. There he died in 1848. Surviving him were his wife, Elizabeth Bennett, one son, Seaborne, and four daughters. ANNOUNCEMENT CONCERNING THE MARKETING OF CHEROKEE LANDS 1
Executive Depart1:1ent, City of ,Houston, July 26, 1842. The President having been empowered by two several acts of the Congress of the Republic to have surveyed and brought into market four hundred thousand acres of the public domain of the country, included within the limits of the country known as the " Cherokee Country," will receive proposals for the surveying of the same from such persons as may wish to engage in such employment. The work will require to be executed with as much dispatch as will comport with the labor of the undertaking. Great accuracy and perspecuity in the plats of surveys, full returns, and ample field notes will be required of those who undertake the task. Applications are advised to be made in person.
