To Col. H. Washington : Dear Sir- I have learned with regret and sorrow that it has been reported that you were a defaulter to this government. I do not know in what way you could have become so, for you never had, within my knowledge, any government property or money in your hands. For my part I have always regarded you, and still regard you as a gentleman of strict honor, fine feelings, pure integrity and exalted chivalry.
