considerable excitement, not only because the safety of the official documents was involved, but also because local interests were endangered by the removal of the capital. TO THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 1 Executive Department, City of Houston, July 15, 1842. To the Honorable, the House of Representatives: In answer to a resolution of your Honorable Body, asking information in relation to a certain loan said to have been re- cently made &c., I herewith submit a plan of the contract, as now on file in the Treasury Department. In consequence of the un- expected absence of the commissioner appointed to close the nego- tiation, occasioned, as I am informed, by indisposition, I am not able to lay before the House the precise conditions of the loan. The variations, however, from the copy now furnished are un- important. If the report of the commissioner is received before your ad- journment, it will be with much pleasure transmitted to your Honorable Body.
