of endorsement which is not liable to the same objection, and which may be printed on the back of the warrant, or I will endorse it myself. Agreeably to an Act of the Legislature approved on February 14th, 1860, this warrant will draw ten per cent per annum interest, until paid. Sam Houston.

Hon. C. R. Johns, Comptroller, Sir: According to your report of May 29th there is still on hand $26,267.71 subject alone to the appropriation of frontier defence. I authorize a portion of this fund to be used in payment of the claims of Messrs. Werbiski and Gray, on· condition that you replace the amount issued, out of the first money which may come into the Treasury, to the fund or for the frontier defence. I desire a written reply. Mr. Turner: You will proceed to Wichita Agency and there prepare for a trip to the Prairies. The object of employing you is to ascertain where those who steal our horses find a market, and with whom they trade. You will upon leaving the agency skirt along the northern waters emptying into Red River and keep a direction, that will necessarily cross the trails made by animals which have been stolen from Texas this last season, and by that means you will be put in possession of important facts touching the object of your visit. If possible I desire that you shall ascertain where the horses stolen from Texas have been herded until sufficient number were collected together to make a drive. I wish all the information you
