To JOHN M. SMITH 1 Executive Department, Austin, April 17, 1860.

Captain John M. Smith Dear Sir, Enclosed please find a copy of a letter which has just been received at the Department. From the tenor you will see that this will be work ahead for you. It would perhaps be better that you should not make a general scout on your way to Belknap, but concentrate your forces at some point where you will be most likely to intercept these bands. Enclosed you will also find Despatches to Colonel Johnson and Captain Dalrymple which you will forward by express without delay. Captain Burleson has just been ordered to join Captain Dalrymple in Clay County. He has just returned from a scout to the Wichita Mountains without finding Indians. So soon as Colonel Johnson's command is ready to move, orders will be forwarded to call Captains Burleson and Dalrymple into the expedition if he should think proper. Sam Houston.
