Houston, 11th July, 1861.
Hon. C. R. Johns, Comptroller Dear Sir, Enclosed I send you a draft on Mr. Swenson for the amount of my Taxes due to the State. I gave in a list of all my property, lands &c in the State to the late Sarni Woods, Assessor and Collector at Austin, and when I left Austin, I did not think to pny it; and from various matters, I had not thought of it until yestc ·:lay, when I heard that lands were advertised for Taxes. I fe~il confident that I am right as to the sum due the Govern- ment, but if I have made any mistake, I will be much obliged to you if you will send me a receipt for my Taxes, and I will make it all right. I have the amount rendered to me, but I have not my papers with me, and I may have omitted a few cents in the amount. Be pleased to answer this letter and let me know if it is satis- factory. Please address me at Cedar Bayou, P. 0., Chambers County. Truly Yours, Sam Houston [Rubric] Amt. of Draft $181.00 1 Co1nvt1-ollers Letters, Texas State Library.
