A PARDON TO PREVENT A SLAVE'S BEING WHIPPED, APRIL 3, 1860 1 THE STATE OF TEXAS. WHEREAS, It has been represented to me, That a certain negro boy named Abe, the property of E. V. Stanley, has been charged and stands guilty of "Burglary" in the Justices Court of the County of Harris, and State afore- said, and Sentenced to receive Seven hundred and fifty lashes on his bare back at stated periods until he shall have received the whole number: and Whereas, it has been made known that Said boy Abe has already received the greater number of the said whipping, Which, in the opinion of the Executive will meet the ends of justice, and humanity demands that the residue of said Sentence be abrogated, Now, Therefore, I, Sam Houston, Governor of the State of Texas, by virtue of the power vested in me by the Constitution and laws thereof, do hereby pardon the Said boy Abe, from any and all further whipping and confinement on account of said Sentence, and hereby direct all officers having the care and custody of Said boy Abe, to release and discharge him frbm further Confine- ment therefor. To the Chief Justice of Llano County Sir: Upon the delivery to you by Mr. William B. Davis, or his securities, the receipt of Lieutenant Gideon P. Cowan for 15 rifles and 15 six shooters, and the remaining 5 rifles and six shooters in his possession you will receipt for the same, and declare in your receipt that the bond of William Davis and securities for the safe delivery of 20 rifles and six shooters fur- nished to the Fall Creek Spy Company by Governor Runnels, is cancelled, holding this as your voucher. You will hold the five rifles and the five six shooters subject to my order. Sam Houston.
