Lieutenant Stephens, Eastland County Rangers Sir: You will in accordance with my order sent by the hand of Mr. Lester, place your command in Eastland County, and keep them there except when off on a scout for protection of Eastland. If any changes are made in your Company, or any of your men leave the service, you will fill up such vacancy from Eastland County, or from those living near that county. Your detachment is raised especially for the benefit of East- land County, Erath County already having a detachment. You will in case any of the men do not desire to enter this service, be careful to reclaim the arms delivered into your hands. Russel, Acting Commissioner of the Boundary Survey Sir, Enclosed you will find a copy of a letter from the Sec- retary .of the Interior, fixing the 10th of May next, as the time of starting for the Boundary Survey Commission. As the Com- mission on the part of Texas will have to be in readiness at so early a day, I wish you to report to me upon receipt of this, the number of animals, wagons, and hands it will be necessary to provide for carrying on the survey, also the number of ani- mals now under your charge and their condition. What would be the probable expense of getting the wagons &c. ready to start and whether, in case you should wish to visit this place before you set out on the trip, you can have the preparations to go on during your absence.
