TO JAMES BUCKNER BARRY 1 Executive Department, Austin, Texas, December 6, 1860. Lieutenant James Barry, Meridian, Bosque County Sir: You will upon receipt of this order, immediately raise a force of Twenty-five men, commanded by one first lieutenant, two Sergeants, and two Corporals, to co-operate with Captain Sul Ross in defending the frontier, and be subject to his orders. Your detachment will be mustered into service at Fort Bel- knap for a term of three months, unless sooner discharged. Orders will be sent to Captain Ross, to supply you with rations and ammunition as far as he is able to do so. Other rations are now being forwarded to supply the troops. You will, as far as possible, regard the general orders issued to Rangers, and endeavor to give defence to the settlements, and pursue and punish any Indians who may commit depreda- tions. A copy of orders is enclosed Sam Houston.

Gentlemen: It is the desire of the Executive, that you pro- ceed at the time appointed in the enclosed schedule to receive testimony in regard to losses from Indian Depredations in the various Counties of the District assigned to you. Blanks have been sent forward to the care of the County Clerk of _______ County for your Commission. The same will be filled up with statements of parties, giving the number and kind of stock lost. The Chief Justice or the County Clerk will then administer the oath and certify without the Seal. On the back of each statement you will write briefly the facts upon which the parties base their belief that the property was taken by
