To LAWRENCE s. Ross 1 Executive Department, Austin, October 16th, 1860.

Captain L. S. Ross, Commanding Texas Rangers. Sir: You were directed in my orders of September 11th to take charge of all the supplies at Belknap, and to hold the same in safe keeping subject only to the order of the Executive, which order you will carry out to the letter, permitting no one to inter- fere with you in disposition of them, as heretofore ordered. Lieutenant Washington Hammett informs the Executive that the State must sustain considerable loss through the neglect of parties having charge of the supplies, and the improper disposi- tion of some of them. You will ascertain, as near as possible, by whom the waste has been permitted, and the amount of actual loss, and notify this Department of the same, as also all particu- lars connected with the matter. As you will be held responsible for the supplies, ordinance stores, and transportatio~ turned over to you, you will be careful that every article is accounted for and that economy is used in every thing connected with the service. · Sam Houston.

To J.M. W. HALL 1 Executive Department, Austin, October 16, 1860.

Captain J. M. W. Hall, Mustering Officer &c. Sir: Your orders of September 29th have no reference to the mules for which Lieutenant Hammett has an order. If the animals are not disposed of by Colonel Johnson, as directed, Lieutenant Hammett will take charge of them and bring them to this place. Your orders relative to Government property refer alone to ordinance stores, camp equipage, wagons, et~. You will use every possible dispatch in the discharge of the duty entrusted to you as the Executive will approve of no delay that is not absolutely unavoidable. Sam Houston.
