Forty-sixth. He died while in this service in Washington, D.C. His body was brought back to Texas and interred in San Antonio. At Washington, Gustave Schleicher's learning, his clear and extensive insight in the field of political economy, his exact choice of language, ren- dered his carefully prepareci addresses, in the House of Representatives, models of educational value upon whatever subject he discussed. President Garfield said of him: "He is one of the best informed men whom I have ever known. He has done justice to the scholarship which Germany gave him, and the large and comprehensive ideas with which life in this new world has inspired him." You ask that an Engineer be appointed to examine the work done on the ex- cavation of the Channel through West Galveston and San Luis Bays; but you om.it to designate the person whom you wish ap- pointed. So soon as you have designated some competent person and have forwarded the name to this Department, the appointment will be made. Sam Houston.

Mr. W. Terry, Contractor, Jefferson, Texas Sir, Your letter of the 21st in relation to the completion of your contract on Caddo Lake and Bayou, has been received. The mode by which you will receive your money is this: Make out your account and forward it to this Department for approval. It will be presented to the Comptroller and a draft will be for- warded for the amount, less one per cent which you will have to pay for exchange.
