Johnson, Commanding Texas Rangers Sir: Having learned that you have purchased a good many mules for the use of your command, and as you are aware that they will not be paid for until the Legislature makes an appro- priation therefor, you had better, if it can be done, try and get the parties to take them back. If this cannot be done, upon your arrival at Belknap, you will turn over all the mules purchased for the Regiment to Lieutenant Hammett and take his receipt for the same. Sam Houston.

Captain Joseph Walker, Sir: Upon receipt of this order you will proceed without delay to Dallas and take charge of the government stores and muster rolls in the hands of Colonel John M. Crockett.~ You will take charge of all the stores and dispose of them to the best advantage, either at public or private sale, using all economy in their dis- position.
