Colonel M. T. Johnson, Commanding Texas Rangers, Sir: On the 31st of July, 21,000 complete Rations left this place for Belknap for your command, and will reach that point by the 25th of this month. You will have a detachment of men there, in readiness to receive the stores and to take care of them upon their arrival until you have further orders. It is important that I should be apprised, by eve1·y mail from Belknap, of what is going on there. Sam Houston.

Mr. James H. Swindells, Dear Sir: On the 31st of July, 21,000 complete Rations left this place for Colonel Johnson's Command, and will reach Belknap by the 25th. I have ordered Colonel Johnson to have a Detach- ment at Belknap to receive them and to take care of them. Should they reach you before the Detachment arrives at Belknap, you will take charge of them and see them properly cared for until an officer and Detachment arrive. See that they are stored and cared for. Sam Houston.
