and direct that on the 17th day of April next there shall be an election held at the different precincts in the district of San Augustine for a Senator in Congress to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of the Honbl. S. Cozine. 2 And it is hereby further ordered that the Honbl. William McFarland 3 Chief Justice of the County of San Augustine be and is hereby commanded to hold said election for Senator on the day above named And he the said William McFarland is hereby directed and commanded to appoint the Judges and Clerks for each precinct who shall be qualified by him or some other Justice of the peace for said County. W. Winkler (ed.), Secret Jo11rnals of, the Senate, Republic of Texas, 1836-1845, 10); then, was elected District Judge (Ibid.); he was also nominated boundary commissioner, December 5, 1837. He died at his home in San Augustine in November, 1839 (see George L. Crocket, Two Centuries in East Texas, 258). 3 William McFarland was born in Pennsylvania in 1774. He came to Texas in 1830 and settled at San Augustine. He participated in the cam- paign ngainst Piedras in 1832, and was elected to the Convention of 1832 from the Ayish District. He was elected alcalde of San Augustine in 1833, and became Chief Justice of the San Augustine District in 1836. He died at his home in Belgrade on August 16, 1840. See E. W.
