To THOMAS TOBY & BROTHERS 1

Columbia, Texas, March 10, 1837.

Dear Sir, You will by no means forward any men to Texas as Troops, unless they bring with them ample supplies for two months, good arms, cartouch boxes, or Shot Pouches, and cloth- ing, for six months. Do not vary these instructions, as the first of March was the longest period allowed for volunteers. I desire that 500 stands of arms be forwarded to the army as soon as possible and for Gods-sake do send bread stuffs, to the army, and to Velasco. To the army for 1,500 men, for two months, and to Velasco, 200 men. . Last night I heard from the army that there had been no bread stuffs, for ten days past; nor had they news of any coming. Do, my friend, I beg you, forward provisions agreeably, to the requisition made by Colo Thruston;~ The supplies, sent for are indispensable to the salvation of the army. Unless our friends now sustain us, [they] will leave Texas in a situation as deplor- able, as it was on the 20th of March last year. You need enter- tain no fears of being amply requited by the Government for any advances, which you may make to the country. I feel confident that every allowance will be made by the Government, so as to give complete indemnity to those who may be responsible, for any aid rendered to our necessities. Please let me know all the news, and what we are to rely upon. I will write to Colonel Thruston, and send him a copy of this letter that he may call on you, and know our Situation. I am greatly pressed with business, and have but little time to write. Sam Houston [Addressed]: Messrs. T. Toby & Brothers [Endorsed]: 1,837.
