WRITINGS OF SAM HOUSTON, 1837
54
All men think themselves wise. They have proved themselves so, and their evidence is written in blood. You will know my orders, and the policy which seems to me best! I have appointed Commissioners, and they have forgotten every duty! I have written to Genl Rusk in relation to matters, and if my orders are not obeyed, I am not responsible to those who do not obey me: I solace myself with the assurance, that, not one drop of blood, has been shed in Texas, by my orders, unless it was in the Battle of "San Jacinto." If men will not obey orders, they will find that another power, is at least equal to disobedience. This power, I will exercise! Capt. Jewell~ will, so soon as it can be done, place a ferry and Block-house on Trinity; at the crossing: This will be more than has been done by hundreds! I hope they will deserve the appellation of Soldiers; I am proud of it: They are from my own land! You may say to your brother that his accounts, can only be settled, when he is here! I will do all that I can for the people in that quarter! Tell them to obey my orders and they will not err! As to the matters, which you write about in the "Pamphlet," we will not differ; and on this subject, I wish your slumbers to be sound! and your wakings, cheerful! I hope to have the pleasure of meeting you, when we will enjoy peace in the land: I hope you will write to me often, and let me know all the news. I refer you to Major Jewell who I am assured will do every thing in his power, for the frontier inhabitants. I pray God for your perfect Security, and happiness. You know the sacred injunction, "Watch, and pray; least you enter into temptation." Regard this!! ! Sam Houston [Rubric] Honble Daniel Parkers P. S. I will file your brothe1·s accounts with the auditor; Major Moody! 4 H.
