to the 13th 14 & 15th articles of the intercourse law of 1834. There is a disposition with some individuals to alienate the confidence of the Creeks and Cherokees from the United States and to enlist them in the present contest now going on between the Texians & Mexicans. I have been directed by the War Department to restrain any such an interference and in dis- charge of that duty, I beg leave to submit for your legal action the enclosed letter "Wm. Armstrong, Act. Supt. Intd. Trest. Terry." 2 Lieutenant Peter Harper was a soldier of San Jacinto, and Comptroller's Militcwy Service Record, No. 540, Texas State Library, shows that he was a second lieutenant, who was honorably discharged from the service on April 27, 1836. In 1838, the Nacogdoches County Board of Land Comm:ssioners granted him a headright of land for one-third of a league. This would indicate that he was an unmarried man, but the appended letters show that he was married to a Ch·erokee woman. 3 Kendall Lewis was a half-breed Creek. He served as Indian agent for the Texas government, and Houston had a great deal of confidence in him. 4 See Houston to John H. Eaton, June 24, 1829.

Gentlemen Any Captain of a Steam Boat, or Vessel, will oblige the Government in giving the Bearer, Mr. John Buchanan, a Cabin passage to any point where he may wish to pass, and the same will be paid out of any monies in the Treasury. White 2 Sir: You will proceed with the least delay possible to Mercers, and from thence across to Mill Creek and Cummins Creek as well as the Brazos as high as Leckeys or even higher, should it be needful. The object of sending you on this rout is to ascertain what amount of Beef and Pork could be obtained if needful and at what price, the money to be _paid in ca.sh at 70 or 90 days. Take
