To JACOB S. SNIVELYt

Columbia, Texas, 24th Jany 1837. Dear Sir, I wish you to see the Shawnee Indians, and par- ticularly Linney their Chief. Find out their disposition and let me know it. If you cou'd see the Caddo's on Red River I should be glad that you wou'd do so, and know on what ground a Treaty cou'd be made with them, so as to prevent them from uniting with the Wacoes, Tow-wassics and other Tribes who annoy our frontier, on the Brazos, Colorado, and Guadeloupe Rivers. You will be paid for your time, and the Expense, which you may be at in attending to these matters. I desire that you should keep your eye on all the Tribes, and let me know all that is pass- ing. I have appointed Goyens, 2 to the Cherokees, but you need not let any person know that you are written to on this subject. You may promise Linney the Shawnee Chief, presents to be paid in the month of May next. I desire that you write to me immediately and frequently. I have no late news of the enamy. I am lately from Camp. The Army is in good order, & improving daily! I only spent a few days there as my time was pressing me to business here. I wou'd visit Nacogdoches, but I really have not time. [Write] to me, and let me know what the Commissioners are doing, that I appointed to Treat with the Indians, for not one of them has ever written to me. I wish you would let them know that I think strange of it. Be so kind as to make my salutations, to Col. Madam & M [iss] Raguet, and my friends Generally. Don't fail to write me all the news, and very often. Send Expresses if you should deem it necessary. Sam Houston Capt. Snively [ P. S.] See Judge Dor,3 and know [w]hat he did with [the] Shawnee Chief. I left some matters to attend to. [Addressed]: To Capt. J. Snively~ Nacogdoches Texas l\'Ir. Young
