WRITINGS OF SAM HOUSTON, 1842

friend, I never before felt the want of help so much as at the present moment! Can you not be with me? I have long since ordered the archives to this place. War does not press -upon us, and if it did, the Government must move in its own orbit. We will be in no hurry, and one thing is true, that few wise nien are hasty in great business! Weak men and silly ·ones are hasty ; wisclom is the result of reflection! The people of Texas may rest assured that I will never cease to war upon Mexico, until Inclepenclence is secured, or the nation is conquerecl! Texas can't be conquered. No time until the present, has justified the resolution of carrying war into Mexico. I will now press the figure and trust to a brave people. Our cause is holy, and all we have to do now, is to act with wisdom, discretion, and valor! You will rejoice, no doubt, at this determination, but, my dear Miller, you have only looked upon the lights of the picture! Re- member the lights have their shades! When you contemplate all the difficulties, and cast an eye upon the perspective, you will perceive, many objects, which a careless observer would not dis- cover. I will watch every thing. Hockley can tell you the rest. Mrs. H. has been very ill, but is now pretty well and wishes to be presented kindly to you. Thine truly Houston Miller [P. S.] My calculations from the first have all been realized. I told you of this last winter, and when I heard that the Mexicans had taken Bexar, I predicted its evacuation by them. Fools only pursue phantoms & children will chase butterflies. The people and the frontier did nobly, but at Houston and Galveston they acted thoughtlessly, if not foolishly. Harris and many other counties are literally robbed of horses-nobody did it-so much the worse! Capt. Daniels will tell you all! Sam Houston [Rubric] [Addressed] : To W. D. Miller,Esq Austin Texas Capt. Daniels [Endorsed]: President Houston to W. D. Miller, March 17, 1842. 1From Mr. Al Dealey's Collection of Houston Materials, Dallas, Texas.
