in relation to the furniture purchased by the government for the use of the Executive, exhibiting the amount originally purchased, (as far as can be ascertained,)-the date of the purchas~s and the cost; also, what now remains on hand and its condition. '!'he present Executive has no disposition to appropriate the same to his use, on account of its ruinous condition; and would, there- fore, recommend its immediate sale, and that the proceeds be placed in the public Treasury. He can find no law regulating its disposition; and therefore, refers the matter to the action of Congress. The necessity of this communication is suggested by the fact that there are no locks on the President's House, and that what remains there is exposed to pillage, which has already commenced as he has been informed: The building itself is in a ruinous and dilapidated condition, and not in a situation to be tenanted with any degree of comfort to the occupant.
