later announced as the administration candidate for the Presidency, the election to be made in the fall of 1841. Sam Houston became the opposing candidate for the same office, and during the spring and summer of 1841 considerable animosity was exhibited by both these men. This campaign enmity was published and augmented by the newspapers. Throughout the late spring and summer of 1841, the newspapers were very partisan and very bitter. 3 George W. Terrell was nominated and confirmed Secretary of State, Jan- uary 30, 1841. See E. W.
