Perry County ( Gospel of the State, or Justice of the Peace of said County-You are hereby authorized to celebrate the rites of matrimony between Samuel Houston and Margaret M. Lea and join them together in the holy bonds of matrimony, and for so doing this shall be your sufficient authority. Given under my hand at office this 9th day of May, 1840. J.B. At Col. Sublett's, Aug. 28th, 1840.

Gentlemen, Sensibly impressed with the kindness and cour- tesy of your invitation to a public dinner, I take pleasure in tendering to you my cordial acknowledgments. Owing to the general and unusual sickness prevailing, at this time in the country, I feel it my duty, and accordant to my feelings, to decline any manifestation of festive regard, which the gener- osity of my friends might award to me. It will nevertheless be my duty to meet the citizens of San Augustine county, and render to them an account of my stewardship, while representing them in the congress of the Republic. With a view to this pur- pose, I will designate Thursday (3d. Sept.) 2 as the day on which I will meet my fellow citizens in the town of San Augustine.
