the steamers Velocivecle and Wisconsin measuring 125 tons each ascended the Sabine river for .more than three hundred miles above its mouth. The most populous counties in the Republic will, when the trade is opened, ship their cotton to the Gulf by the City of Sabine. These counties are Jefferson, Jasper, Shelby, Sabine, San Augustine, and Nacogdoches. Every facility will be given to those who wish to make improvements, and shares can be had by application to the stockholders and lots for buildings and dwellings, from the agent at the city. CONTRACT WITH HICKMAN LEWIS FOR BLOODED STOCK 1

Articles of agreement made and enter'd into this 30th day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & thirty nine, between Hickman Lewis of the county of Limestone State of Alabama of the one part and General Samuel Houston of the Republic of Texas of the other Witnesseth, That for and in consideration of the sum of Six thousand dollars, receipt of which is hereby acknowledged the said Lewis has this day bargained and sold and by these presents does bar- gain and sell unto the aforesaid Saml. Houston the following list of blooded stock, which the said Lewis hereby binds himself to deliver to said Houston in person, or by his accredited agent in the City of Sabine, Republic of T'exas within the months of Sep- tember and March following the date of this agreement (To Wit) No. 1st One Chestnut filly Proclamation by Arab dam Lady Hamilton by Balls Florazelle at $2000.00 2nd Chestnut filly Martanza by Sir Arthur, dam Amazonia by Tecumseh standed to Imp Lusborough - ---------······.····-······-·.. ···········-····at 800. 00
