You will notify the Bowl, of your readiness to begin, and desire him·to send some confidential men with you. Should any diffi- culties arise from the Whites you will have power to call on the Civil and military authorities of the Country, to enable you to execute the work. It is of first importance to the safety as weU as the character of our Country for justice, and integrity. If it is done speedily, it will tranquilize the Indians, secure their confidence, and give security to at least a portion of our frontier. The greatest prudence and caution on your part as an Agent will be necessary in future, and you may assure the various Tribes and Chiefs of my friendship as well as the friendship of the Gov.:. ernment toward them, and tho' a few bad men may act badly, it is not the wish of either the Government or the People. You will make frequent reports of the condition and disposition of the Indians, and of your Official progress. After the eighth of next month you will make reports to me at the seat of Government.
