deprived them of their arms, shot a boy, who expired in the arms of his Mot.her, and wounded a man, and then robbed them of all the property they had (except two or three worn out horses) consisting of mules, horses, money, leather &c which they were carrying to Bexar, to be exchanged for goods, leaving them neither clothing nor food. And, whereas, the said Cox raised his company without the Sanction of the Government, and in direct violation of the con- stitution and laws of the country, and committed the murder and robbery herein before specified, at the said Tahuacano creek, on the second day of August Instant. Now, therefore, I, Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, in the name of the said Republic, do, by these presents, offer a reward of Five Hundred dollars for the apprehension of the said Cox, and his delivery to the civil authorities in this City, in order that he may be dealt with according to law. And, whereas, three of the men belonging to the company of Cox, were arrested by the civil authorities of Bexar, as accom- plices in the above Outrage, and owing to the insecurity of the county jail, were bailed by the Chief Justice of the county afore- said. And, whereas, the remainder of the company are running at large, and in as much as they cannot be considered so culpable as the ringleader of the band, they are hereby required to de- liver themselves up to the civil authorities, in order that the extent of their participations in the outrage may be fairly as- certained, and the odium of the transaction thrown on the indi- viduals who have merited it the most. Such a course on their part it is believed would tend to mitigate the severity of the law, so far as respects their conduct in the matter. In testimony whereof, I have caused the great seal of the Re- public to be hereunto affixed. Done at the City of Houston, this the thirtieth day of August A.
