To THOMAS J. RusK 1

26th Aug 1838 Genl Rusk This letter~·contains news in relation to the Priara [Prairie] Indians and the disposition of the Shawanees which may be of importance to you. If so; I hope you will profit by it to the fullest extent, and if you can engage the Shawanees, Mr. Sims 3 can tell you all the propositions sent by me to them on the subject of an alliance. They are fine warriors. Do let the line be run-as it long since should have been; and, the Cherokees, Shawanees, Kickapoos, and all other Tribes will unite with us, as they are all interested and will hear of it in thirty- six hours after it is done. Let Mr. Sims soon return to the Cherokees, and tell them of the intended presents, but only to let the Chiefs know it. They can understand that much English. Let them say to Fox Fieldsz that he shall be paid so soon as I can go to Houston. I will go in a short time to see the Cherokees, but I am not very well now. Sam Houston [Rubric] [P. S.J The Bowl was aware before the fuss began that I had ordered the line to be run, & he will now expect it as well as the other tribes. Houston. [Endorsed]: From Gen Houston & Chas Sims to Gen Rusk
