Barrett, January 2, 1836. · ssam Patch was Houston's favorite saddle horse. He seldom allowed anyone to ride this horse except himself. 0 J ohn Johnson came to Texas from Virginia in 1834. He enlisted in the Texas army in March, 1836, and participated in the battle of San Jacinto. He died in Travis County in 1852. See Dixon and Kemp, He,·oes of San Jacinto, 418. ELECTION PROCLAMATION, JULY 11, 1838 1 Be it known that I, Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, do, by virtue of power in me vested by law, hereby order & direct the Chief Justices of this Republic to cause an election to be held in all the counties thereof on Monday the third day of September next for the election of a President and Vice President of the said Republic, Representatives, and, in the Senatorial Districts of--&c, Senators in Congress. The chief justices of the respective counties will appoint the judges and Clerks for each precinct who shall be qualified by them, or some other justice or justices in the county or counties in which the precincts are established, and the returns from each precinct are to be made by the said judges to the Chief Justices respectively within five days next succeeding the elections. The votes polled for the President and Vice President will be sealed up and forwarded to the Speaker of the House of Representatives. And whereas the counties of Gonzales, Victoria, Goliad, Re- fugio, & San Patricio are partially depopulated and many of the citizens thereof are residing temporarily in different parts of the Republic; therefore, in accordance with a joint resolution passed at the second session of the first Congress, it is hereby further ordered that the Chief justices of the counties where such in- habitants may be residing shall appoint separate judges to re- ceive their vote~, which are to be returned by them to the Chief Justices, and by the latter forwarded without delay to the De- partment of State; and in like manner, should the regular elec- tion be held in any of the counties named as depopulated, the chief justices thereof will make the returns to the said Depart- ment.
