Menard's Mill, July 7, 1838. Dr. Smith's presence showed me that the venerable Dame had not cast me off, and it relieved me and has nearly restored Mr. Ross-so much so, at least, as to determine me to set out today, and by making arrangements let him follow as soon as he may be able to ride. His case has been one of fearful character-the worst that I have ever seen in the course of my experience! There is an infernal kind of Book 2 about my Table or Desk, a "History of Texas." If you can without trouble bring it, I will be obliged to you! It contains some matters of import to me. I know of no suggestion to make about my matters in the Depts. While you, Hockley, and Birdsall are there, all must go right and proper. When you leave they will be on the guard, and I will be satisfied that all will be done that can or ought to be done. But more when we meet! I am most effectually broken down as a medicine man, and feel the want of science and skill. I am
