A PROCLAMATION OFFERING A REWARD FOR A CRIMINAL 1 Whereas, official information has been received, that Billy, a Choctaw Indian, died of a wound, inflicted by a young man named James Aldridge, by striking the said Indian on the head with a spade:- · Now, therefore, I, Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, do by these presents, in the name of said Republic, offer a reward of Two Hundred dollars, for the apprehension and deliv- ery, of the said Aldridge, to any Judge or Justice of the Peace, of the Republic, in order that he may be dealt with according to law. In testimony whereof, I have caused the seal of the Republic, to be hereunto affixed. Given under my hand at the City of Houston this the thirtieth day of June A. TO THE CHIEF JUSTICES OF THE COUNTIES OF SAN PATRICIO, GOLIAD, BEXAR, AND VICTORIA, JUNE 30, 1838 1 Sir: In as much as many ~itizens claimed by this Republic reside near to the Rio Grande, and should so far as possible have the benefits of trade and commerce with the interior of Texas so as to exchange such commodities as they may have to exchange for such others as they may think needful for their comforts and enjoy the benefits of our laws, which are created for the protec- tion and good of the citizens of the Republic,- And whereas it is not possible to discriminate between the citizens of this Government, and those of the Republic of Mexico, residing on or near the Rio Grande, it is proper that such rules and restrictions should be established, as will do injustice to none, while it may guard us from any hostile influence from the latter. J•t. Our friends from the frontier may have leave to trade from the Rio Grande, to the town of Bexar, and other parts of Texas, under the following rules.-
