To MARTIN VAN BUREN, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES 1 Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, to His Ex- cellency the President of the United States of America. I have made choice of Anson Jones to reside near the Govern- ment of the said United States in the quality of Minister Pleni- potentiary of the Republic of Texas. He is well acquainted with the relative interests of the two countries, and our true desire to cultivate and strengthen the friendship which now happily exists between us and from a knowledge of his fidelity, probity and good conduct, I have entire confidence that he will render himself acceptable to your Excel- lency, by his constant endeavors to preserve and advance the interests and happiness of both nations. I therefore request your Excellency to receive him favorably arid to give full credence to whatever he may say on the part of Texas and most of all when he shall assure you of our friendship and wishes for your prosperity. On page 67 of this same record book there is another letter to Van Buren, of slightly different wording, but of the same date. These letters are so nearly identical that the latter has been omitted. To ROBERT A. IRION, SECRETARY OF STATEt Executive Department, Texas, City of Houston, June 28th, 1838. Every head of Department of Government, will require of the Bureau, or Bureaus under his control, a full and detailed account of the business, the number of Clerks, in the respective offices , their salaries, names &c, and will communicate the same to the Executive by the first of October next.
