TO MARTIN VAN BUREN, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES 1 Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, to His Ex- cellency the President of the U [nited] States of America. I have made choice of Peter W. Grayson to reside near the Government of the said U. States in the quality of Minister Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Texas. He is well informed of the relative interests of the two coun- tries and our true desire to cultivate and strengthen the friend- ship which now happily exists between us, and from a knowledge of his fidelity, probity and good conduct, I have entire confidence that he will render himself acceptable to your Excellency, by his constant endeavors to preserve and advance the interests and happiness of both nations. I therefore request your Excellency to receive him favorably and to give full credence to whatever he may say on the part of Texas; and most of all when he shall assure you of our friendship and wishes for your prosperity. So it gratifies me much to solicit of you, your very kind civilities in behalf of my highly estimated friend Col. P. W. Grayson, who will for the present reside at the City of Washington. Col. G. will have it in his power to render to the enquiries, which your Excellency may be disposed to make touching our interesting, but little known country, very satisfactory replies.
