WRITINGS OF SAM HOUSTON, 1838
227
have the pleasure of seeing you if you remain in Texas. Doct. Irion says if I remain here this summer that I will not survive it. So you see I am not anxious to remain on such terms. I thank you for the care of my valued papers and hope at some period to have it in my power to make amends for your great kindness. I regret that my friends shou'd be visited by the Indians, or that any cause of alarm shou'd exist. Until our citizens learn prudence, we must be afflicted by such visitations. The Bowl is here and has every disposition to keep peace and do all that is right and proper. I am satisfied if anything improper or hostile shou'd arise it will be owing to the conduct of bad men. This letter was commenced last·night. Today I am very unwell, and apprehend that I will have to lose much blood. As it will not be in my power to see you soon as I cou'd desire, I will in a few days write again and present to you some matters of considera- tion which I deem due to myself, as a man whose only glory is to wear the mantle of unsoiled honor and untarnished truth. You may suppose that I am enigmatical in what I write! You shall have the key to the enigma! But to speak of one is idle, and it is but truth to say, the world is full and composed of enigmas! I am happy that by your visit to the U. S., Texas lost none of its charms for you. But if it had, your return must have restored very many perceptible to all but yourself. You speak of the exchange of a Jewell (Miss) . This was most natural to transfer a Jewel by the light of Hymen's torch from the altar to adorn a Gentleman's bosom; and think ye what more gentler than a "Dove" and "Ingle Dove" wou'd be, fairly construed, the Fire- side Bird. [ Here a portion of the page has been torn off] I hope you will kindly salute your Parents in my name, and bid the Boys welcome again to Texas; to Miss Augusta and Miss Polly Small fry remember me, while you salute Carlos with a cuff. Doct. Irion will go East this summer, and soon after the rise of Congress. Bye the bye, I have a very good anecdote to tell you of, in which Doct. Irion and myself are implicated- but not in crime- only in luck!! Salute my dear Godmother and the little ones for me! My Padre is here and is on his good behavior. I am pleased to see it. You will owe me at least a dozen letters for this one, if you value it according to its length.
