ELECTION PROCLAMATION FOR SAN PATRICIO, REFUGIO AND GOLIAD COUNTIES, MARCH 16, 1837 1 Be it known that I, Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, do by the virtue of the power in me vested by the Constitution hereby order and direct that on the 17th day of April next, there shall be an election held in the District com- posed of the Counties of San Patricio, Refugio & Goliad for a Senator to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of the Honbl. E. Morehouse 2 And it is hereby further ordered that the said election be held in the County of San Patricio by the Honbl John Turner in the County of Refugio by the Honbl John Dunn & in the County of Goliad by the Honbl Wm H. McIntire, Chief Justices of their respective counties for the election of a senator in Congress as aforesaid on the said 17th day of April. And they the said Chief Justices are hereby directed to and commanded to appoint the Judges and Clerks for each precinct in their respective counties, who shall be qualified by them respectively or some other justice of the peace for their respective counties- &c &c The returns from each precinct is to be made by the Judges thereof to the Chief Justice of their respective Counties within four days after the election Done at Columbia this 16th day of March 1837 and of the Independence of Texas the Second Sam Houston J. As a young man he became affected with the Western fever and moved to Pike County, Missouri, but in 1826 came to Texas. During the fall and winter of 1836- 1836 he returned to New York and raised a battalion for service in Texas,
