To AsHBEL SMITH 1

Huntsville, 30th May, 1857 My Dear Smith, This will introduce to you Mr. Bryan M Morel of Savannah, Georgia. You will find him a Gentleman with whom you will be pleased. The object of Mr. Morel is to look at Texas, and if pleased to settle here. It is his wish to look at lands, on your Bay, and to take a look at "Cedar Point." I have spoken of you as a Gentle- man in whom he will find all intelligence touching our affairs, as well as other matters. Be pleased, so far as be convenient for you to facilitate his reconnoisance in your section. I left your section the other day with only one regret, and that was my not being with you for one hour, or longer. You will be pleased with Mr. Morel. He is related to the family of General Green of the Revolution. Do write to me, as I hope to return from the East, where I set out for tomorrow; in three weeks. Houston Smith. The riders are up !!! 1ABhbel S11titk Papers, The University of Texas Library. To AsHBEL SMITH 1 Huntsville, 6th July, 1857 PRIVATE! My Dear Smith, You told me that you expected to be a Can- didate for Governor in August next, when I assured you that I would not run. The nomination was made by the Convention, and from what transpired there, as well as a challenge to me, I felt compelled to run, & tho, I could not see you, when I was down, on the Bay, I was most anxious to do so. The riders are all up and the Drum tapped. You will see that those who you had claims on will try to crush you. I must try and if spared, I hope to regenerate the politics of the State & save the public money & the land, for public purposes and uses. I set out tomorrow again. I have been east, and you will see it swept as by a Tornado. Write to me at Austin. Truly Thine Houston. Smith P. S. Salute Col. Morgan, Mrs. Brown and our friends.
