At these several points designated I will be happy to meet Hon. H. R. Runnels, the nominee of the Waco Convention. I object to all "whippers-in, or teasers." Sam Houston 1 Texas State Gazette, June 6, 1857; The True Issue (LaGrange), June 12, 1857. The Gazette, from which this copy has been taken, stated that this itinerary had been copied from the Huntsville Recorder, but did not give the date of publication in that paper. The complete text of speeches made during this campaign has not been found, although there are many state- ments to be found among the newspapers concerning them. One newspaper commented that the same speech, with only such changes as would fit the place and the occasion, was used throughout the campaign. Louis A. Rotten- stein to Charles E. Jones, to be found among the Anson Jones Papers, The University of Texas Library, states that on June 25, 1857, Houston delivered a speech at Dallas, "2½ hours long," and that "Houston lost at least a hundred votes by coming to this country." From the text of this letter it is easy to guess that both Rottenstein and Jones were students in some eastern college, but at home on vacation; they were not yet of voting age, but politically-minded and radical in their opinions.
