To THOMAS J. RusK 1

Huntsville, 12th May, 1857 Dear Genl. Today I have declared myself a Candidate for Governor, and will, so soon as I can, visit your Town. You will be surprised, as I believe, for you know it was my intention to retire from the Senate to private life. They make the issue as they declare "Houston, and anti-Houston." So now the whip cracks, & the longest pole will bring down the per- simmon. The people want excitement, and I had as well give it as any one. Some days since, I received a letter from Tom O[chiltree?], and answered it in a letter of advice. Mrs. H. joins me in regards to you and family. Thine Truly Houston. Rusk. P. S. I intend to visit Houston & Galveston,-return and visit the East, as well as other sections of the State. H. R. 1 Rusk Papers, The University of Texas Library.
