Lewis." The exact date of the speech has not been ascertained, but it was made at Nacogdoches, probably in May or June, 1853. For some information concerning Judge William Lewis, see A Speech made in Houston, 1845, in this volume, p. 6.

APRIL-JULY, 1854

To JAMES BUCHANAN 1

Independence T. 13th Apr. 1854 My Dear Sir. I am very happy to have it in my power to present to you a most worthy friend of mine, Mr. A. J. Ruthven, whom I have known intimately for fourteen years in Texas. There is no gentleman more deserving of respect & esteem than my friend Ruthven, and I solicit in his behalf your kind civilities. I presume his Lady will accompany him on his visit to his native heath, and should she do so, you will find her his "better half." May your days be many, and continue useful to your country and honorable to yourself. Truly yr. Friend Sam Houston [Rubric] Hon. James Buchanan Minister &c &c &c. 1 From a photostatic copy furnished by The Historical Society of Penn- sylvania. -ON A RESOLUTION TO ADVANCE THE HOUR OF THE SENATE'S MEETING, JUNE 14, 1854 1 I move to take up the resolution which I submitted yesterday, proposing an earlier hour for the meeting of the Senate-eleven o'clock, a.m. . . . . In consequence of the adoption, this morning of the resolution for a recess, I think an additional exertion is necessary on the part of the Senate to get on with the public business. The House of Representatives may adopt the amendment made this morning by the Senate to their resolution, and thus an early day will be fixed for us to adjourn. For thiSi reason, I. think it is necessary that we should occupy as much time as practicable in forwarding business. At any rate, we ought to do as much as we can, until we know whether the House will concur in the action of the Senate or not. Hence, I think it is very proper that we should meet a little earlier than we have heretofore done.
