Extract of a. Letter from Gen. Houston

Huntsville, 20th June, 1847. My dear Colonel, Your favor has reached me, for which I owe you many thanks. I have only time to write you a line by private hand. The money which you have collected for me, you will please pass over, or pay over to Torrey Bro. Merchants, City of Houston. All that I can say for the future, is " do the best you can," &c. Sam Houston Col Thos. Wm. Ward, Austin, Texas. [Endorsed] : Ward is a Damned scoundrel. I pay my debts, and if he has not learned yet, he shall do so. To MRS. HousToN 1 Washington, [D. C.J, 3rd Dec. 1848.

Dearest. I arrived here last night from a hard journey. For seven days I never had my clothes off me, and only lay down just one time, and that for the space of four hours. I was exposed to cold, and my head has been aching for two days. To night I have taken some medicine, and I hope to be well by morning. To day was the Sabbath, but I did not attend church. It was cold, or rather a raw day. I met many letters here, but none from you. Mr. Wilson wrote to me as late as the 12th of Nov. He told
