To AsHBEL SMITH 1

Senate Chamber 2nd Aug. 1848 My Dear Smith, This moment I had pleasure to receive your welcome letter. I regret to hear that your head is yet affected by the distressing malady. Depletion, by various means, and small portions of Blue mas will restore you. You can best tell what Kind of Depletion will be efficacious, and most agreeable to you. I would be happy to see you here, but it will not matter, whether you are here before I leave. I will be compelled to go by the most direct & expeditious route home. I want you to go by East Tennessee, and to stay as long, as needful, or as you can, if thereby, my poor sister can be relieved.
