me about, as I love controversy. For instance (sub rosa) I will be into our friend Pierse. He is a poor, a very poor dog skin, you may rely on it. But I can bide my time. Salute all friends, and be assured of my love & fidelity. Thine truly & ever, Sam Houston W. D. Miller P. S. Miller, you let Wilcox take off Mary Donelson, because you would not. Bah! Miller, this was a naughty act of yours. Houston. 1 Miller Papers, Texas State Library. 2 See To Miller, June 30,-1853, and August 24, 1853, this volume. 3 Williarn Pope Duval. To WASHINGTON D. M1LLER 1

Huntsville, October 7, 1853 My Dear Miller, I thank you for your letter, but my Dear Fellow, you did not understand mine. I wrote you to pay Mr. 'Du Vall and send me all that was over that Ward had proposed to pay. He had as I understood from Mr. Duvals letter, proposed to pay $120 or 30 dollars. Send it to me if you can get it in a Draft on Houston, or do the best you can. I will be satisfied with what you do. Indeed, my friend, at this time I have no spare cash on hand. I will do all in my power for you with "Corcoran & Riggs," and if I can, I will raise cash, and try and make some investments in land. I have some cash, but I cannot at this time command it. Say 7 or 8,000$ You are right when you say that I have attended to the public business more and better than to my own, for as I understand it that is the English of your rebuke. We all join in best regards to you and yours. It is almost dark. May Hea:ven bless you! Ever truly Houston Miller. P. S. Write to me by return mail, and be in better spirits. I mean better heart. Who cares if your work is not done! No one will blame you. Get married, Miller, while young!!! Yours, Houston 1 Mille1· Papers, Texas State Library.
