To WASHINGTON D. M1LLER 1
Huntsville, 24th Aug. 1853. My dear Miller You will have learned that as·you can't come ·to see me, that I am about to remove within visiting distance of you. I intend locating in Independence, to spend the residue of my days, should Heaven be pleased to give me more. I expect to·reach there, if I have luck, about the 1st of November, and then it is possible I may go as far as Austin, if everybody desires it, and if no bocly does, I am, sure to go!!! Well, the election is over, and I took no part in it. I did not want the "Winter of our discontent" elected, 2 as I thought he would be useless to the state. Now, my dear Miller, my cousin Caruthers 3 is in Austin, as I learned from John Conner, & from him you can obtain the papers necessary in the Ward case. 1 It may be that I did not tell you how much I had received of the money. It was in two amounts, one for 170.00$, and the other 200$. With the ex- ception of Gillispie's fee, he owes me the balance with Interest, but this you may knock off, only so much as it will pay my lawyer. I hope that you will compel him to pay it. He is bound in law; and in honor bound! No foreign agent from this country to another, who disregards honor, or law, should be permitted to represent our Government! He can't do it. Do write me soon! To day I intend to go to Cedar Point on business. Hope to return in ten days. Mrs. H. joins in regards to your Sister & family, and Sam comes in to send his r·egards to "Mr. Miller!" Ever & truly thine. Houston. Hon. W. D. Miller
