"All charters, the General contended, should be immediately repealed, unless the conditions had been fully complied with, and a new order of things established." · 1 Texas State Gazette, July 16, 1853. The Gazette quotes from the Nacog- doches Chronicle, but the issue of the Ch1·onicle containing this speech is not available; nor has the exact date of the speech been ascertained, it is 1·easonably certain, however, that it was some time in July, prior to the 16th.

Private!! My dear Sir, I have to thank you for your last letter, and the copy of the first to me at Washington. So soon as I received your last I went to get yours in answer to my first, where I thought I had very safely placed it, in com- pany with a correspondence which I had with Mr. Pierce previous to his inauguration, and to my infinite regret I could not find the one, or the other. It so happens that I write badly at all times, and I am fearful, that after two hours laborious search for the correspondence, that my writing will not be intelligible to you, or rather will not be legible. I have had gentlemen to assist me in writing, and some one may have placed the letters referred to, in a place which he deemed more secure, and it would be hopeless for me to look longer for it. The gentlemen are all absent at this time, and I do not know when they will return. I have no doubt but at some time, I will be able to reclaim your letter as well as the others referred to, but not in time to enable me to send you as early reply as I desire to do!! In advance I have to ask your pardon for requesting of you the favor of sending me a copy of your letter addressed to me in reply to mine, written to you last fall. I will then be able to answer your letter so soon as I return (God willing) from a visit to a distressed relative which I hope will be in a fortnight or so from this time. I know that I am troublesome, but as it is a matter of some interest to both of us, and not without some connection with the truth of history, when it may be written, I wish to attend to it soon!!! Some important documents !iave arrived and I will take pleasure i,n
