strict scrutiny into my Democratic votes and principles, I will not a]low myself to be arraigned on this floor as schismatic on this particular bill, especially when General Jackson, the champion of Democratic principles, as pure as Jefferson, has laid down the doctrine by which I am guided, if my understanding can comprehend his language. To His DAUGHTER NANNIE 1
Washington, 17th February, 1853. My Dear Nannie, Writing as often as I do to your Dear Ma, & bro Sam, I know you will be happy to receive a letter from me, if I was only to ask you to kiss your Dear Ma, bro Sam, & little sisters. I love all my children, but I love them to be industrious, a:nd try to make me happy. We always wish to see, or hear from them if they are beyond our view. Kiss all for me, and hug Mag. Tell her I will not forget her, but will, if I live, take her some present. Thine affectionate Father Sam Houston Nannie E. Houston. 1 From a photostatic copy of the original letter which is in the collection of Mrs. Ruth John Saunders. Mrs. Saunders is a daughter of Mrs. Margaret John, of Houston, Texas.
