me very happy, because you told me all were well, and that you were happy. I hear all your matters with much pleasure. I must tell you of a present that some one .sent to me for you. It will do to place in your tent. It is a patent bed-stead, such an one as I took home. They will do for lighti persons, but not for one of my weight. I intend to send it to you as soon as I can send home my Boxes. The Hat, my son, with the Feather in it, I have ordered to be made. You may tell your Dear Ma, that I may surprise her with finery, but I will leave her to guess what it is to be! You may say that it shall be "nice," and something your Ma will like, I am sure! I want you to tell Joshua to have the filly in good order and well rubbed. I may have to ride her to · court at Wheelock, if I live to attend court, and I will try, and take the family with me, or the largest, and smallest members of it. I send two scraps, one for your Ma to put in Nannie's scrap Book, and one in yours. I hope you will get yours by 1·ote the first day. Tell your Ma that I will attend to the "Recorder," and "Mother's Journal" business. Now, my son, you see that I have written you a long letter, and now, see how long a one you will write in return. You must kiss Ma, and little Sisters and give them my love. You must tell Miss Isabella howda, and Jackson, and say I will write to him ~oon. Tell the servants howda, and I am happy to hear that they all behave well! Tell Col. Yoakum, Judge Hay, and all our friends that I remember them kindly. I hope, my Dear Boy, you are obedient to your Ma, and studious, of your Books. Always, when you say your prayers, my Son, think how kind God is to you, and all of us, that he allows us to be happy. Be grateful to God! Thy affectionate Father, Sam Houston Sam Houston, Jr. [Across margin of first page] : I am sorry that your poor little pet died ! [Across margin of second page] : I intend soon to write to your Ma. 1New York Public Library. Photostatic copy in The University of Texas Library,
