To LEWIS S. CoRYELL 1
Washington 13th June 1852. My Dear Sir, I will with pleasure accept the invitation, which you have been pleased to give me, in behalf of the people of New Hope, & Lambertsville, to address you all on the anniversary of our Independence. On what day do you propose? I am told that the 4th of July comes on Sunday! If so, shall Saturday, or Monday be the festival? Write to me, and let me know all! Sam Houston Hon. Lewis S. Coryell 1 From a photostatic copy furnished by The Historical Society of Penn- sylvania. For some mention of Lewis S. Coryell, see to Lewis S. Coryell, July 21, 1850, this volume.
TO LEWIS S. CORYELL1
Washington 19th June, 1852. My Dear Sir: On Saturday evening, the 3rd July, I will try and be at Minton, either by .water, or by the cars. I will be happy to see the Gentlemen spoken of, and take their directions. I expect to surrender at discretion! But if the committee were ladies, I would expect more discretion than gentlemen generally have! I will try and do the best I can, but there has been "so much noise and confusion" of late, that I fear a failure on my part! We do not know here who is to be the Whig nominee. Be he whoever he may, we must beat him. Mark that! I do not intend to make a party address, as you say both Parties wish to hear me! Sam Houston [Rubric] Hon. Lewis S. Coryell, New Hope Pa. 1From a photostatic copy furnished by The Historical Society of Penn- sylvania. To LEWIS s. CORYELL 1 Washington, 30th June, 1852. My dear Sir: An unexpected event :Ras occurred which will prevent me from the pleasure of meeting the people of New Hope, and Lambertville, on the 5th of July, agreeably to the kind invitation which I had accepted.
