attempt to express to you my pleasure at finding her on the recovery on my return, nor my deep, and abiding sense of obli- gation to you, for you [r] skill, & kindness to Mrs. Houston. Sam, sends his "compliments to every body." [Addressed] Doct. Ashbel Smith, San Jacinto Bay, Texas By Doct. Bauer. 'Ashbel Smith Pcipers, University of Texas Library. :See Volume II, 181. To AsHBEL SMITH 1 Liberty, 27th Apl. 1847. My Dear Smith, I send by express, this letter. My desire is that you or Doctor Beauers,2 should come up to Grand Cane, so soon as possible. Mrs. Houston has more anxiety, than is agree- able about the condition of her breast. The ligature remains in the wound. In addition to this, from immediately below the wound, there is diagonally across the stomach, bearing to the left side, something like a cord or tendon, which is quite sore, and she is fearful that it may be a root, of the Cancer. For my own part, I have but little apprehension of the fact, but this does not lessen in the least, my anxiety, to have all appre- hension of danger removed, from her mind. I will doubtless remain here, until one of you gentlemen will be passing to Grand Cane, and will with pleasure accompany you there! Call for me as you pass! The ligature remaining in the wound, is a cause of some anxiety. Devotedly thy Friend, [Addressed] : To Doct. Ashbel Smith, or Doct. Beaners, Galves- ton Bay, Texas. Mr. Ijams. 3
