WRITINGS OF SAM HOUSTON, 1849

To MRS. SAM HousTON 1

Douglas 18th Nov. 1849.

Dearest I am here, and as I have time to write, I am happy to do so. I have nothing new to detail to you. The day has passed quietly with me, for I had no company in the stage. I found the road pretty good, and in Moore's~ Telegrpah, some instructive and quite pretty moral articles. I would as soon have found them in any other paper. As I passed the residence of Mr. Frizill, I saw and paid my respects, and presented yours to Betty Kulp, and her mother's love to her. She was rather talkative as I had only four minutes to stay. If I were to guess, I would say that she is in the situation "which ladies wish to be, who love their Lords." I may be mistaken, but certainly there was no drum- ming or thinning on the corset board, when she spoke of Mr. Culp's indisposition. He is absent to the old states in health! I can tell you no news of this section, only that my friend Hogg has been acquitted for killing Chandler in Rusk. It was right that he should be! I hear that Red River is in fine Boating order, so that the prospect of my not being detained is very good. If God wills, I shall press on my journey, so as to have as much time as possible to spend with our relatives in Alabama. I have no expectation that any thing important ·wm transpire until after the Holy-days. I may, My Love, write to you on my journey oftener than I anticipated when we parted. I do pray that you may be cheerful in my absence, and not repine at what is unavoidable. I hope Sam will be industrious so as to earn his "hat." What hat? Ask him to draw it on a piece of paper, and enclose it to me. I hope to receive a letter from you soon after my arrival in the City. Remember, Love, you are to write to me once a week, when you are able; I will not say, and disposed, for I know that you will be disposed at all times; to add to my happiness, and nothing on earth can make me more happy than to know that you are happy. That embraces all that are dear to me.
